The latter is related to the intensity but they do not represent intensity in themselves. Once intensity is high, frequency and duration must be low. You can’t train hard and long. One must give in to the other.
Intensity is simply generating the most amount of stress on a body part or muscle in the shortest period of time. Intensity is best understood by explaining its effects on muscle and its relation to muscle growth.
Weight training serves as a means to an end. It merely places stress on the muscle being trained. When abnormal stress is placed on a muscle it has no choice but to respond in growth and size – this leads to more fat loss and better tone. Intensity is the amount of stress placed on a muscle. Stress indicates that unless the muscle is stressed beyond its current capacity, it has no reason to grow or change. Fact is the body hates change and will change only if the stress is too much. The body is homeostatic in nature. It has to stay the same – in temperatures, muscle size etc – this is often in relation to its environment. E.g Africans carry less fat because of the heat. Just as Europeans carry more body fat because of the colder temperature. Point is the body wants to stay the same. The body maintains a consistent temperature, normal enzyme level and more importantly it also maintains this consistency by limiting the amount of muscle it carries.
So how does weight training fit in?
O.k! for muscle growth or adaptation to occur, enough stress must be placed on the muscle so that it is literally damaged on a cellular level. Intensity is a mental thing in fact. When you curl by a weight say on the bicep curl, your brain sends a signal instructing the muscles to contract, and in line with homeostasis, it instructs only enough fibres to get the job done. Here is where the gold lies. Each fibre that moves does so at 100%, no more, no less. The only problem is it instructs only the necessary fibres to get the job done. That is why light weights and low intensity is a waste of time. Heavy high intensity body building instructs all muscle fibres to work – to get the job done. So you see it does not matter if you use machines or free weights, so long as the intensity is high, you will generate the required results. But again let me clear this up, lifting heavy weights will not do the job on its own. Lifting heavy weights with high intensity will do it! In theory, you could use light weights to get results but that would be impractical and extremely painful. The lactic acid build up would be too intense and rep ranges would be too significantly (70 – 100 reps) – 99% trainers would fail mentally before their muscles reacted to the physical failure.
Most lifters are guilty of picking up a weight, doing a pre-determined set of picking up a weight, doing a pre-determined set of repetitions and setting the weight down. That sort of training is no training at all – you are wasting your time and money at the gym. To capture the benefit (all or nothing philosophy) you have to lift to the point where completing another rep is physically impossible! And then beyond is the only way you grow and to do that you must have really developed mental powers because the pain often deludes you into believing that you have reached failure when you have not. I call this the “little voice” and in my book, I show you methods of eliminating it. This “little voice” is the major obstacle to progress because it is very difficult to beat. When you train beyond failure the body has to grow to adapt to the stress. It has to as a self defense mechanism even though it does not want to do it. To prevent you from doing such damage to it, it uses lactic acid build up (physical) and mental obstruction (little voice) to fool and force you or stop you. Your mind is the only tool you have to beat this “fooling mechanism”. Beat it and you have got a physique to be proud of in record time.
The truth is very few people have the potential to achieve this intensity, very very few. I have devised mental techniques that allow the average person to go beyond failure. Can I get lean on your program! The experts say that I need to diet to get ripped abs!
The ‘experts’ are partially right. But it really depends on your current level of body fat and your genetics. If you want decent abs you want to gain muscle and loose fat, dieting will work but like I always say , the results will be temporary(great for a competition). The fact is , if you gain muscle and maintained the same amount of body fat you would become leaner and for most that is sufficient to bring out their abs. This applies to people who are not overweight. If you are overweight you would need to go on a ‘diet’ but this diet would simply be the elimination of all fatty foods and junk foods. The trick here is that you want to build lots of muscle and do aerobics to burn the fat left. No ‘fad’ diets are needed. There is a delicate balance between diets and exercise, both produce the desired result. For most the desired path would be more exercise rather than dieting. More muscle translates to a higher metabolic system. Furthermore gaining muscle makes you leaner simply because muscle is dense, a 20lb gain of muscle is not the same as a 20lb gain in fat. People mistakenly equate the two. A 20lb gain in muscle will not be as noticeable as a 20lb gain in fat
In your manual you recommend that we eat lots of calories but my question
is doesn’t all those excess calories turn into fat?
Yes literally excess calories turn into fat. But if you stimulate enough
muscle growth that will not necessarily happen. We recommend that you eat ‘mums
cooking’ because life is abundant in that we should learn to enjoy the
fruits it offers. If you want to have a pizza have it but in moderation. We

A.My views of nutrition are not unconventional , rather they are simple. So simple that many can't understand that something so simple can be so powerful in generating the results they seek. Many programs make a huge deal about nutrition , they offer a calorie counting book, a food measuring scale and offer you sample menus and charts all in an effort to confuse you and satisfy your craving and desire for a step-by-step nutritional guide.
the basic argument used by such individuals to explain the need for "individual nutritional strategies' is the inaccurate notion that we are all different and hence we all require differernt nutritional needs to achieve the reults we desire. whiles we may differr to some degree we are all humans and we all have the same basic nutritional requiremnts. We all need Crabohydrates , proteins , fats , vitamins and minerals.Rgardless of how they are consumed we still need them. so we don't differ much when it comes to our nutritional needs. iF YOU are currently making little progress in your muscle and fatn loss endeavours , it is most likely because you are not training properply to warrant noticeable chnage or you are not allowing sufficent time to allow for fully recovery and then muscxle growth to take place.
